This past week was a busy one!
The mold remediation is done and the basement looks great – nice and clean and not like a dirty pit! $6,000 gets you 4 days of demolition, HEPA air scrubbers, EPA-approved containment, bathroom removal (a bonus – I wanted to pull that out anyway!), and a clean slate to start over with!
The kitchen & full bath have almost all been fully demoed, and if you are looking for cheap kitchen appliances or cabinets, the fridge & oven are each for sale at $50, the dishwasher is for sale for $25, and the entire kitchen cabinets are for sale for $200. They may look vintage, but they are in fantastic shape and function well. Lower cabs even have pull out drawers! These would be great in a rental!
The not-so-great news of the week was the asbestos tile surprise waiting for me underneath the carpet in the 3rd bedroom. We also have it in the half bath (which I knew) and underneath the laminate floors in the kitchen. With 2 full rooms of it, it was time for remediation. Thankfully the quotes I got are not more than $4,200 with the re-test for air quality after the work is done. Somehow I thought that wasn’t that bad. Then I realize it’s $4,000!!!!!
People have told me that renovation will go over budget due to what you can’t see – and I am a believer in that now, by all means.
